Gallia County had 212 children attending 6 different summer camps and 18 teens participated as counselors.  Camper surveys indicated that camp counselors served as positive role models, camp activities introduced STEM education and the camping environment increased personal independence of the campers. 100% of Gallia County counselors attend a two day Counselor College, directed by Gallia County, a total of 101 teens from 13 counties participated in this year’s training.  This training is part of an award winning workforce prep program that has been shared nationally Evaluations of this year’s program indicated that 100% of the counselors reported an increase in their skills for:  risk management, teaching, and workforce preparation. Gallia 4-H also received $4,680 in camp scholarships, which assisted 41 children in attending camp.

Do you have what it takes to become a camp counselor?  Come and find out at the 2020 Canter’s Cave Counselor College.  Camp counseling is open to any teen between the ages of 14 and 18, by Jan 1, 2022.   The American Camping Association requires that all teen counselors have a minimum of 25 training hours for new counselors and 20 for returning counselors.  Anyone wishing to be a camp counselor for Gallia County must complete the ONLINE counselor application by February 1, 2022, Selected candidates will then be invited to a short interview held February ??, 2022 interviews will be set up between 8 am-4:30 pm, (no school this day), and successful interviewees will be invited to attend Counselor College training.

We are looking for great camp counselors. Shooting Sports experience is not required!
  • Junior Shooting Sports Camp is July 15-Jun 17th at Canter’s Cave. Youth must be at least 14 years old as of January 1, 2022. Youth must complete all required training. If a youth is not a counselor in your county but is interested, we do have a training opportunity April nd at the adult instructor workshop. We have also had some youth who were not available for county camps complete training in the county at the discretion of the 4-H professional (a great option for those who live further away!). If the youth is a counselor in your county, they do need to fill out an application but will not be required to attend any additional training.
  • Senior Shooting Sports Camp is July 24th-29th at Canter’s Cave. Counselors must be at least 18 as of January 1, 2022, and not attending SS camp as a camper. This is a great way to keep young alumni who have recently aged out involved! For alumni, a great system has been to have them go through volunteer screening in the county. You recruit a young volunteer and we get some great camp counselors! Training is available April nd for these individuals also.
